Getting to Negombo from Colombo is actually much easier and much quicker than you think. You have a few options, too. Let’s start with my personal favorite option train.
Train: Affordable and Scenic
If you’re looking for an enjoyable way to get from Colombo to Negombo while being pocket-friendly, the train is the way to go. This is my personal preference whenever I travel outside Colombo. Trains depart from Colombo Fort railway station. The journey takes about an hour, offering scenic views of the coastline and small towns along the way. It’s actually a pretty cost-effective way to travel.
Bus: Budget-Friendly but Crowded
For those really looking to stretch their budget just a little bit, buses running between Colombo and Negombo offer an even cheaper option. Buses are frequent, making it easy to catch one at most times of the day. Just check that with the main bus stop staff or ask a local; they can help for sure. The fare is quite reasonable, especially for solo travelers or backpackers.
However, this affordability comes at a price, and that’s comfort. During peak hours like early morning office and school times, around 12.00pm to 3.00pm school rush hours, and in the evening around 4pm to 7 pm, buses can get packed, leaving little room to breathe, let alone sit.
Be prepared for a bit of a squeeze literally, especially if you’re traveling during rush hour. Don’t take this wrong; it’s actually part of the experience, too, hahaha. If you can see it like that, the bus ride might be very enjoyable too, the locals are very friendly so you don’t have to worry about that.
Taxi: Convenient and Comfortable
If you have the budget, comfort, and convenience on your priority list, taking a taxi might be the ideal option. You can easily book one using apps like Uber or PickMe. You can get a private, air-conditioned ride straight to Negombo. The cost for a taxi ride hovers around 6000 rupees, which is approximately $33, and the journey usually takes between one to one and a half hours, depending on Colombo’s notorious traffic. avoid traffic hours as much as possible. The cost will even be reduced.
While this option is clearly way pricier than the train or bus, it’s perfect for travelers with heavy luggage or those looking to avoid the crowds.
If you are Getting to Negombo from Bandaranaike International Airport, Tuk-tuk is the Quick and Budget-Friendly option. Cost: About 800 rupees (approximately $4.5). Yes, you can get a bus, but I personally think this is the way to travel this small distance. Or get an Uber or PickMe.
Local Transportation in Negombo
Negombo has quite a few transportation options to help you get around the city easily at a reasonable price. One of the most common ways to travel short distances is by tuk-tuks. Uber or PickMe is the best way to find tuk-tuks, and it’s a bit cheaper too. Local drivers who don’t use apps are friendly, but you might be charged a little more than when using Uber or PickMe. Also, you can rent a tuk-tuk from tuktukrental.com, which you can drive yourself. If you’re a bike person, you can rent a bike from islandridesrilanka.com and enjoy your ride while experiencing the breeze of Negombo.
If you do, please remember that it’s important to agree on the fare before starting your journey, as tourists sometimes get overcharged.
For a more budget-friendly option, public buses are a good choice. The buses are color-coded, making it easier to find your way around. However, as I mentioned before, they can get crowded during peak hours.
If you’re planning longer trips or traveling with a group, hiring a private driver might be the way to go. Many guesthouses can arrange private drivers so have a chat with the staff.
With this option, you guys can make stops as you please without worrying about public transport schedules. Plus, some of these drivers know some special places that you might miss if you travel otherwise, so chatting with the driver is a great thing. In general, Sri Lankans are very friendly and ready for a chat almost all the time. Plus, you’ll get some amazing stories from him.
Walking is another great way to enjoy Negombo. The coastal roads and back streets are full of local shops, small markets; most of these locations are often overlooked by tourists. Walking might make your visit even more memorable. Plus, the fresh salty air makes the travel tired go away instantly.
